Kalidahs
Monstrous beasts with bodies like bears and heads like tigers, with claws so long and sharp they can tear lions apart, dwelling in a part of the forest.
First named in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, ch. 7
To add to their discomfort, they soon heard strange noises in the depths of the forest, and the Lion whispered to them that it was in this part of the country that the Kalidahs lived.
As the books describe them
The Kalidahs--beasts with bodies like bears and heads like tigers--had once been fierce and bloodthirsty, but even they were now nearly all tamed, although at times one or another of them would get cross and disagreeable. The Emerald City of Oz, ch. 3
