By using this site you accept what is set out below. It is short, because the site does little: it publishes pages and asks nothing of you.

The books are not ours, and not anyone's

The twenty-four Oz books quoted here, by L. Frank Baum and Ruth Plumly Thompson, and the illustrations of W. W. Denslow and John R. Neill, are in the public domain in the United States. Quoting them requires no permission and grants no one any rights in them.

Copyright terms differ by country. If you are somewhere these works are still in copyright, that is your position to check, not ours.

The 1939 MGM film is not in the public domain, and nothing here derives from it. This site is not connected with, endorsed by, or licensed by the rights holders in that film or in any other Oz adaptation.

What is ours

The books are free to anyone. The work of this site is the layer on top of them: the summaries, the notes, the way things are organised, and the connections drawn between them. We keep the rights in that.

You are welcome to quote a page and link to it, and to use the site freely for personal study, teaching and research. Please take a claim's citation with it when you do — the citation is the point.

What needs asking first: republishing this material at scale, redistributing it as a dataset, or bulk extraction by any means, automated or otherwise. If you want to build on this, write to us. The answer is often yes, and it is a short conversation.

We would rather you linked to a page than copied it, because pages here are corrected as mistakes are found, and a copy will not be.

What this site does not promise

The reading of these books is partly done by machine, and it makes mistakes. Citations are re-checked against the text on every build, which catches a great deal and does not catch everything: a quotation can be perfectly real and still be attached to the wrong claim.

So: this is a reference, not an authority. It is offered as it is, with no warranty of accuracy or completeness. Do not rely on it for anything that matters without checking the chapter it cites — which is exactly why every claim here names one. If you find an error, tell us and it will be fixed.

To the extent the law allows, no liability is accepted for any loss arising from the use of this site or from anything on it being wrong.

Availability

The site may change, move, or stop. Pages are merged and removed as the reading improves, so an address that worked before may not later. There is no undertaking to keep any particular page at any particular address.
